Before you fly to Japan
Prepare a Japanese phone number before arrival
Short answer: you can start the order abroad, but “ordered before arrival” does not always mean “active before arrival.” A voice number can require identity checks and delivery or pickup of a SIM or eSIM access-code document.
Provider conditions checked: 2026-09-16

Do not buy a data-only travel eSIM if a bank, rental application, employer or reservation specifically asks for a Japanese mobile number or SMS. Data access and a Japanese voice number are different products.
Choose the route from the result you need on arrival day
| Need on arrival | Product to check | What may still be required |
|---|---|---|
| Maps and messages only | Travel data eSIM | Unlocked compatible phone and online installation; no ordinary Japanese number |
| 070/080/090 number and SMS | Voice SIM or voice eSIM | ID verification, an accepted delivery/pickup route and activation |
| Number after address registration | Resident monthly voice plan | Residence document and registered Japanese address may be checked |
| Several devices | Pocket WiFi plus a separate number if needed | Pickup/return time; Pocket WiFi itself does not supply a mobile number |
A three-stage ordering timeline
- Before payingWrite down whether you need voice calls, incoming SMS, mobile data, roaming outside Japan and a 070/080/090 number. Confirm that the exact product supplies every required function.
- Before departureComplete the provider’s ID steps, save the order number, and confirm where the physical SIM or eSIM access-code document will be delivered or collected. Keep a data backup for the first day.
- After landingCollect the product, finish activation, test an incoming SMS and ordinary call, then use the number for applications. Do not submit a number to an important account before testing it.
Three official routes worth checking
Mobal voice SIM or eSIM
Mobal publishes voice-only and voice-plus-data products with a real Japanese number, incoming SMS and worldwide delivery or Japan pickup. Its voice eSIM page says the access code is delivered as a physical document rather than by email, so check the latest lead time and destination before relying on it for arrival day.
Sakura Mobile monthly voice plan
Sakura Mobile publishes a Japanese-number voice plan and accepts cards issued outside Japan. Its current process includes identity/address checks for monthly service, so compare the documents you will have after arrival and the pickup or delivery route shown for your order.
JP SMART as an official alternative without a PR link
JP SMART states that an application can start outside Japan and that eligible products can be collected at Haneda or Narita. This is an official alternative to check when those airports and its payment/identity route fit your arrival. Tsutawarule receives no payment for this link.
Five details to record before choosing
- Exact number type and whether incoming verification SMS is included
- Documents accepted when ordering abroad and after entering Japan
- Whether an eSIM code arrives by email or as a delivered document
- Pickup location, opening time and the name that must match the order
- Setup fee, first charge, monthly fee and cancellation method
This page does not promise that a provider will approve an application. Providers perform the final identity and eligibility checks.
