No registered Japanese address yet
Choose a Japan SIM without a residence card
Start by separating two needs: mobile data for a visitor can be bought through travel products, while a real Japanese voice number is subject to stricter identity and delivery checks. A data-only eSIM does not become a Japanese number because it works in Japan.
Provider conditions checked: 2026-09-16

Do not use another person’s identity, address or SIM contract. The safe route is to choose a provider product whose published eligibility matches your own status and documents.
Four routes from no card to a working connection
Visitor data only
Travel eSIM, prepaid data SIM or Pocket WiFi can cover maps, messaging and web access. These products usually do not provide a normal Japanese mobile number for calls and SMS verification.
Voice product for non-residents
Specialist providers publish voice SIM/eSIM products with identity checks and delivery or pickup routes for visitors. Read the exact product page because data-only and voice products can share the same brand.
Apply from abroad and collect
Some services allow an application before arrival and document/product pickup at selected airports. The arrival airport, pickup hours, name matching and payment route decide whether this is practical.
Register an address first
When a monthly resident plan requires a residence card and registered address, use temporary data after arrival, register your address, then apply with matching documents.

| Resident monthly voice plan | Yes | Residence document and registered address may be required | Long-term use after settling in |
Provider pages to check against your own documents
Mobal
Check the voice product, not only the travel data product. Confirm accepted ID, delivery/pickup, activation, Japanese-number functions and current charges on the order page.
Sakura Mobile
Sakura Mobile publishes monthly voice plans for residents and separate travel products. Its voice page identifies address/identity verification; use travel data only as a temporary route if you do not meet monthly-plan requirements.
JP SMART
JP SMART publishes an application-before-arrival route with airport pickup at Haneda or Narita and several payment methods after activation. Check current airport and ID conditions directly. This is not a paid link.
Three expensive mistakes to avoid
- Buying “Japan eSIM” without checking number typeMost travel eSIM listings sell data access. Look for an explicit real Japanese number, voice and incoming SMS.
- Assuming foreign-card support removes ID rulesA provider can accept your card and still require a specific ID, registered address or collection method for voice service.
- Entering an untested number into an important accountActivate first, receive a test SMS/call, and confirm that the target service accepts the number type.
