New Chitose Airport internet: eSIM, SIM and Pocket WiFi

Short answer: one unlocked eSIM phone usually points to a travel eSIM; several devices point to Pocket WiFi; and anyone needing a Japanese voice number should compare a resident/voice service instead of buying a data-only airport product.

Do not buy by “unlimited” or price alone. Confirm phone compatibility, pickup hours, delivery deadline, return method and whether the product includes a Japanese phone number.

The decision is about four trade-offs

Option Usually suits Main advantage Check before buying
Travel eSIM One compatible, unlocked phone Delivered online; no airport counter eSIM support, SIM lock, activation timing; usually no phone number
Prepaid physical SIM One unlocked phone without eSIM No router to carry or return Pickup/delivery, SIM size and bands; usually data-only
Pocket WiFi Families, laptops or several devices Share one connection; no SIM swap Battery, pickup deadline, return envelope and loss charge
Monthly voice SIM/eSIM Resident who needs calls and SMS Japanese phone number for ongoing use Residence/address ID, payment, activation and monthly cost

This page does not rank every provider. It separates the choices that cause expensive mistakes: data-only versus phone number, one device versus a group, and short visit versus residence.

Published reference prices, not a final quote

Sakura Mobile currently publishes travel eSIM from ¥1,250 before tax, travel SIM from ¥3,500 before tax and Pocket WiFi from ¥299 per day before tax. Its resident Voice+Data plan starts at ¥2,980 per month before tax. Prices, data periods and campaigns can change, so open the provider page for the price on your travel date.

Japan Wireless publishes airport pickup including New Chitose and supports several payment methods. Its page says a Pocket WiFi can connect multiple devices; check the specific order screen for the plan price and pickup slot.

Five checks before your flight

  1. Unlock and compatibilityConfirm the exact phone model, eSIM support and supported network bands.
  2. Decide whether a number is essentialData-only products do not provide ordinary calls or SMS verification.
  3. Keep the QR code offlineFor eSIM, save the installation email or QR instructions where you can read them without data.
  4. Write down the pickup locationFor physical pickup, keep the terminal, counter name, opening time and order number.
  5. Plan the returnFor Pocket WiFi, confirm the return deadline, envelope and charges before leaving Hokkaido.

If your flight arrives after the counter closes

An eSIM that was ordered and prepared before departure avoids relying on counter opening hours. If your phone cannot use eSIM, arrange hotel or airport delivery with enough time and keep a backup route such as airport Wi-Fi until collection. “Same-day pickup” should not be assumed for every order or flight.

Why this page can save more than an AI summary

A summary can list products, but it cannot know whether your phone supports eSIM, whether you need SMS, how many devices you carry or whether you will live in Japan. The finder above converts those facts into a first option and leaves the final eligibility check on the provider’s official page.

Sources checked

Provider links that may pay a referral fee are visibly labelled “PR”; the choice logic and official alternatives do not change.
